APPLICATION FORM FOR THE POSITIONS OF CHIEF REFEREE AND DEPUTY CHIEF REFEREE TO OFFICIATE AT RESCUE 2014
MARSEILLE, FRANCE 13 SEPTEMBER TO 28 SEPTEMBER 2014
Applications are invited from all experienced and suitably qualified persons who wish to be considered for appointment for one or more of the positions of Chief Referee and Deputy Chief Referee for Rescue 2014, the Lifesaving World Championships, to be held at Marseille, France from 13 to 28 September, 2014.
Please note that the terminology for what we use to call “official’s” has changed to fall in line with IOC terminology to “Referees/Technical Officials”. The position of what was previously called “Referee” is now called “Chief Referee” and “Deputy Referee” now called “Deputy Chief Referee”.
If you wish to be considered, please complete the attached form and submit it to the ILS Sports Commission Rescue 2014: Event Management Committee, by 15 July, 2013. Please note no late applications will be considered. All applications received will be acknowledged – if not acknowledged within 5 days, please resubmit. Appointments will be made by the ILS Sport Commission based on the recommendations from the Rescue 2014 Event Management Committee, consisting of Dave Thompson (Chair: ILS Sport Commission), Greg Allum, Jolanda van Dalen, Martha Cuetos and Jelle Meintsma (Secretary: ILS Sport Commission). All applicants will be advised if they have been successful or not by 30th August, 2013.
Chief Referees and Deputy Chief Referees are required for the following World Championships:
- National Teams Pool Championships and National Youth Teams Pool Championships
- InterClub Pool Championships and InterClub Youth Teams Pool Championships
- Masters Pool Championships
- National Teams Simulated Emergency Response Competition Championships (SERC) and National Youth Teams SERC Championships
- InterClub SERC Championships and InterClub Youth Teams Championships
- National Teams Ocean and Beach Championships and National Youth Teams Ocean and Beach Championships
- InterClub Ocean and Beach Championships and InterClub Youth Teams Ocean and Beach Championships
- Masters Ocean and Beach Championships
- Surf Boat Championships (including Masters)
- IRB Championships

Applicants for the position of Chief Referee and Deputy Chief Referee should have extensive experience and have demonstrated exposure to senior roles at National and/or International competitions. The minimum requirement in terms of qualifications is that the candidate should have the qualification of Chief Referee or equivalent (e.g. Level 3) in his/her Federation for at least 5 years.
The Chief Referee is required to undertake the following:
- In conjunction with the ILS Sport Commission and Local Rescue 2014 Organising Committee (LOC) assist in the appointment of officials for their respective Championships.
- Advise the LOC on the detail event programme of their respective Championships.
- Check event draws for their respective Championships.
- Attend the Chief Referees briefing with the LOC and ILS Sport Commission on 13 September, 2014 (pm).
- Attend and conduct the briefing of officials, coaches and athletes for their respective Championships.
- Hold the position as Chief Referee and undertake all duties as set out in the ILS Competition Manual of their respective Championships.
- Submit a report on their respective Championships at the conclusion of the event.
The Deputy Chief Referee is required to undertake the following:
- Hold the position as Deputy Chief Referee and undertake all duties as set out in the ILS Competition Manual of their respective Championships.
- Attend the Chief Referees briefing with the LOC and ILS Sport Commission on 13 September, 2014 (pm).
- Attend all briefings, including the Chief Referees briefing with the LOC and ILS Sport Commission.
- Assist the Chief Referee where required.
In terms of the contract between ILS and the host for Rescue 2014, it was agreed that travel and accommodation be provided for 6 International Referees. The ILS Sport Commission, Fédération Françcaise de Sauvetage et Secourisme (FFSS) and the LOC will decide which Chief Referees and/or Deputy Chief Referees qualify for the travel and accommodation. The remainder of the appointed Chief Referees and Deputy Chief Referees will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation, to be paid for either by the individual concerned or their National Federation that nominates the individual. No additional expenses – apart for the 6 Referees - are provided for by the Local Organising Committee of Rescue 2014, FFSS or ILS.
The ILS Sport Commission will seek endorsement from the applicants National Federation and will verify the information supplied is correct, before any appointment is confirmed.
