Overview Since 2004, the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) and Surf Life Saving Great Britain (SLSGB) have jointly appointed teams to represent our country in European and World Life Saving Championships. Both SLSGB and RLSS UK are committed to putting in place a structure to support both the team and its management. It is important that there is a balanced and effective group steering the direction of the joint team. This is achieved through a group called the GB & NI Lifesaving Team Steering Group. The group ensures that the management of the team is appropriate and is able to focus on maximising performance of athletes while achieving agreed objectives for the group. The Steering Group is made up of 3 representatives from each of the recognised NGB’s (SLSGB & RLSS UK), as below: Lead Athlete Representative Providing advice, assistance, and assurance to make sure that the Steering Group are working in the best interests of the athletes. The role should be nominated by the respective National Governing Body (NGB). The individual must be able to meet the role description and person specification. This is to ensure that they adequately represent the athletes view. The role also requires the individual to perform checks and report on athlete needs. Lead Performance Representative Providing advice, assistance, and assurance to make sure that the Steering Group operates to maximise team performance. The role should be nominated from the NGB’s sports commission or through the NGB recruiting independently. The individual must meet the role description and person specification. The role also requires the individual to perform checks of team selections, periodically view athlete performances and monitor implementation of performance plans by team managers. Lead Executive Representative Providing advice, assistance, assurance to make sure that Steering Group decisions and actions minimise risk and optimise benefit to respective organisational objectives. The role should be nominated by the Chief Executive Officer of the respective NGB and meet the role description and person specification. The role also requires the individual to perform monitoring checks that standard procedures agreed Steering Group level are appropriately implemented and reviewed as appropriate. Group members must attend Steering Group teleconference calls and meetings, as well as contribute to development of relevant information and relationships. This is to ensure continued development of the GB and NI team performance. They must be able to work in partnership with the other members of the Steering Group and be committed to giving the best support possible. Upon joining the group All members entering the group are to be provided with up to date: Both RLSS UK and SLSGB are individually responsible for ensuring that Steering Group members representing their organisation understand their role and responsibilities and act in the best interest of GB & NI Lifesaving. Selection criteria 2013
Definitions:
GB & NI Lifesaving Squad: Is the squad of athletes selected from those who have declared themselves available for selection to a GB & NI Team.
GB & NI Lifesaving Team: Is a Team of athletes selected from the GB & NI Squad, to compete at European and World Championship competitions.
Selection Criteria:
- The GB & NI Lifesaving Team will always be selected on the basis of the best athletes available and eligible for selection.
- GB & NI Lifesaving Teams will be selected by a clear process based on an individual athlete’s potential to contribute the highest number of points at World and European events in both individual and team events.
- Athletes with medal potential at individual events will take preference over athletes who may score a similar points total across a range of events, unless the end result weakens the balance of the Team.
- Athletes who compete exclusively in Ocean or Pool events will not automatically be excluded from the selection process for the GB & NI squad or the final Team.
- Athletes will be asked to declare their availability for selection in writing prior to a GB & NI Lifesaving squad being announced. Athletes will be asked to declare all recent performances at recognised events as well as any other evidence/information supporting current form and fitness i.e. other relevant competitions.
- The squad of athletes being considered for a GB & NI Lifesaving Team will be declared at the earliest opportunity.
- There will be a procedure to consider appeals from athletes not selected to participate in the GB & NI Squad (NB Appeals must be sent in writing to the GB & NI Administrator within 7 days of the announcement of the Squad stating the grounds for appeal). NB The detail of the GB & NI Squad and process of appeal will be sent to all athletes who have made themselves available for selection.
- There will be a team selection event/s where GB & NI Lifesaving squad athletes are expected to attend. Squad athletes unable to attend a selection event may still be considered for the final team if there are extenuating circumstances for non-attendance. NB Exemption must normally be approved by the Team Manager in writing prior to the selection event.
- At final Team selection athletes may appeal if they believe that the declared selection process has not been followed. Athletes cannot appeal the decision of the Team Selectors. Such appeals must be made in writing to the GB & NI Administrator detailing the grounds for appeal, within 7 days of the Team being announced.
NB Upon receipt of any appeal, notification will be sent to the appellant to acknowledge receipt and clarify the appeal process and timeframe for response
Selection to the GB & NI squad will be made by the appointed Team Manager supported by the Assistant Managers and from athletes who have declared themselves available.
Appeals for inclusion into the GB & NI squad will be heard by the RLSS UK and SLSGB Performance Directors (or in their absence by appointed representatives from either organisation). The decision of the appeal panel is final.
Final Team selection will be determined by the Team Manager supported by the Assistant Manager and verified by the RLSS UK and SLSGB Performance Directors. NB The appointed Team Managers are required to demonstrate the rationale for their selections based on athletes performances, support information, direct observation and performance modelling using comparative data from recent International events.
Appeals relating to the process of Team Selection will be heard by an independent panel. The decision of the appeal panel is final.
GB & NI Team Objective for the European Senior and Junior Championships 2013
- Senior Championships 15th -18th August Noordwijk/The Hague (Netherlands)
- Junior Championships 6th -8th September Riccione (Italy)
To achieve maximum points Score for the GB & NI Team.
This means the aim is to select athletes with recognised potential to contribute across a range of individual and team events and achieve the highest aggregate team score. Whilst there is a desire to take potential medallists for individual events these athletes may not be selected if they have limited potential across other events.
GB & NI Team Selection Process (Senior and Junior)
Athletes will only be considered eligible for selection based on performances achieved at recognised events achieved in 2012/13. The recognised events are:
- SLSGB ranking events and National Championship
- RLSS UK National Speed Championships
- SLSGB British Life Saving Pool Championships
- SLS Wales National Stillwater Championships
- ILS recognised Pool and Ocean Championships (athletes to supply results)
- Other Countries National Championships (athletes to supply results)
Unless there are exceptional circumstances, athletes not able to supply competitive performances from recognised events in 2012/13 will automatically be ruled ineligible. NB Athletes relying on results achieved in 2012 will need to be able to able to show recent competitive results at appropriate events.
There is no obligation on any athlete seeking selection in the GB & NI Lifesaving Squad 2013/2014 to compete in all of the events listed in this Selection Process.
