Do I have to be a qualified swimming teacher to attend a National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC)?

- No anyone over the age of 16 can attend this course.

How much do assessors charge for assessments?

– This should be negotiated at the time of booking assessments.

Where can I order the National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC) assessment forms?

- The National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC) assessment forms are together in a candidate resource form and are available from Lifesavers Direct.

Do candidates have to remove jewellery when training?

- Yes, this is detailed in the RLSS UK Code of Practice.

Do I have to complete any additional training hours in addition to my Emergency Response Activity Supervisor (ERAS) to enable me to take my National Rescue Test for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NTASTC)?

– Yes. Both awards are similar but they have their own specific elements you do need to complete some hours training either during the Emergency Response Activity Supervisor (ERAS) training and before you take the National Rescue Test for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC).

How do I train the some swimming teachers or teachers that do not hold a qualification up to become a rookie instructor?

– If you are a registered rookie instructor and a Trainer Assessor then you can deliver either the lifesaving skills module and / or teaching and class management modules. These are available from the rookie web site under rookie members area.

Does every Rookie Instructor have to buy a pack?

– Yes if they want to become a Rookie Instructor.

I have seen some posters at my local school and I would like them for my school. Where can I get them from?

– The Water smart / safety posters are available from Lifesavers Direct.

How can I gain my Trainer Assessor status in Rescue Test for Supervisors of Swimmers with Disabilities (RTSSD)?

– You would need to attend the disability Trainer Assessor module (SPLS 5). After this you would gain probationary Disability Trainer Assessor status.

Does the National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC) cover me for a first aid at work course?

– No. First Aid at Work has a lot more information in it, is independently assessed and must cover at least 24 hours in length.

Do National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC) courses have to be delivered at an Approved Training Centre (ATC)?

– No. They can be delivered at almost any venue.

Do you have to pass all stages of the award, and what is the recommended award path following this Rookie Lifesaving award?

- Although the awards are designed to be progressive the award scheme can be entered into and exited from at any stage. Bronze Medallion, Assistant Teacher and Assistant Beach Lifeguard are good exit routes following the programme. More information is available on the website.

How do I register to become a Rookie Instructor?

- If you are already a Trainer Assessor then you can register online. You will receive a confirmation email which will enable you to purchase the Rookie Instructor Pack which you will need to do to complete the registration process. The pack cost is £44.95

How many hours would I have to train if my National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC) qualification runs out?

– Minimum of 12 hours for new, minimum 6 hours with previous knowledge and minimum 4 hours retaking the qualification.

Which course can I take that will include adults, toddlers and babies?

- Our Life Support 3 course would be ideal for you. It contains resuscitation on all types of casualty, dealing with unconscious casualties, choking as well as various types of medical conditions.

Who can teach a Life support course?

– We do prefer teachers to have some resuscitation experience but they must have RLSS UK membership or be members of an RLSS UK registered club or IQL Approved Training Centre. The assessor must be a current RLSS UK Trainer Assessor with a Life support 3 or equivalent.

How can I deliver the Save a Baby course?

– If you are a Trainer Assessor you can deliver it easily. You can order the pack from us here at River House at £20 for 20 packs. When you have finished the course, please send us the attendance return form so that we are able to record it. Please contact River House if you require the course syllabus

How many hours do I need to complete to be able to renew my Emergency Response Activity Supervisor?

- 12 hours of ongoing training is recommended and this would reduce the training hours to 6, however this is aimed at employers where it is necessary for holders to maintain evidence of competency. Candidates renewing the award and can show an appropriate level of competency will need to complete a minimum of 6 hours.

My son is taking his GCSE in PE next year. Can you please advise on what life saving skills he will need as he intends to do this?

- The Survive & Save Programme will help your child to acheive many of the requirements of PE GCSE and offer higher assessments. Further information for Teachers and Instructors is available here.

How many other people normally take the course at the same time?

- Most of our courses have a maximum of 12 candidates per trainer.

Does the three assessments rule apply to the Rescue Test for Supervisors of Swimmers with Disabilities (RTSSD)?

- Yes. As the Rescue Test for Supervisors of Swimmers with Disabilities (RTSSD) is a vocational qualification the three assessments rule would apply as per the RLSS UK Code of Practice.

How can I update my Automated External Defibrillator (AED) candidate certificate?

- The easiest way to update your skills is to attend an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) course. You will get the up to date reference manuals as well as be assessed at the end of the day. If you are an AED Trainer Assessor you will need to hold a current AED candidate certificate to prove your competency on CPR and use of the equipment.

Do I need to hold a current life support award?

– Yes. This is used as a measurement of your own competency and skills.

Do we have a current Code of Practice?

- The current Code of Practice is dated May 2010 and is available as a download from our web site or as a booklet from Lifesavers Direct.

Where can I attend a Lifesaving course?

- Some of our awards are being advertised on our web site. Alternately contact your Lifesaving Branch who will be able to give you details of any Lifesaving clubs within your area.

I hold a National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches qualification and I want to work at a pool deeper than the depth on my certificate. What can I do to change this?

– If you have just taken your award and still have the paperwork, then within 28 days you can have be assessed by a National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC) Trainer Assessor and have the additional depth on your certificate. If you do not have the paperwork or it is over the 28 days, the additional depth can be recorded within the CPD record in the back of your NRASTC book and within the training records of the centre.

What paperwork do I need to confirm that my Assistant Instructors have completed?

– All Assistant Instructors must have a pack during the course that includes a form that needs to be signed by a current Trainer Assessor once the candidate has completed their moderation.

Can a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification be used as a pre requisite for an Assistant Instructor or Lifesaving Trainer Assessor course?

– Yes.

Where can I access the course content of a particular award?

- Many of the award syllabi or assessment matrix are available on the latest Trainer Assessor Update disk or our web site.

Who can assess a Life support award?

– A current RLSS UK Trainer Assessor can assess this as long as they have the current guidance material (Life support and Life support, Lifesaving and Open Water Awards handbook).

What qualifications do I need to deliver / assess a specific award?
