National Lifesaving Championships

National Lifesaving Championships is currently Branch & Regional heats with successful competitors winning through to represent their region in the finals. Each competitor must complete all four elements of the event:

Aquatic Initiative Test where competitors have 90 seconds to deal with a previously unknown emergency situation. They have to assess the situation, prioritise and rescue the casualties making the best possible use of any available aids and bystanders.

Life Support Initiative competitors are faced with another unknown situation, which again they have 90 seconds to deal with. Their resuscitation and first aid skills are under the scrutiny while they deal with a simulated accident.

Line Throw A speed event, where competitors coil and throw a rope and pull in a casualty. A throwing rescue is one of the land-based rescues, therefore safer for the rescuer.

Swim & Tow This is a test of strength and stamina. Competitors must swim and tow the casualty back to safety.

National Speed Championships

RLSS UK is now entering some of the larger European and World Competitions, where speed is given greater priority than skill. Individual and Relay events are held over events contained within ILS parameters.

RLSS UK Honours

Our National Honours Ceremony is an annual event where we recognise the enormous amount of time, effort and dedication given by its many members through their commitment in promoting our awards, as well as saving lives in, on and near water.

In order to recognise outstanding contributions a series of Society Honours can be awarded to individuals by our National Honours Committee. This Committee currently comprises the Chairman of the National Honours Committee, the President of RLSS UK and the Deputy President. A member of Headquarters staff is responsible for administration.

The concept is that length of service and meritorious work should each be recognised separately. There are, therefore, two series of Honours - Service Honours and Merit Honours. Each series is independent of the other and each has different criteria of eligibility. Full Guidelines are available.

2013 National Honours Procedures – closing date for nominations is 5th April 2013

Enclosed are details 2013 Guidelines, Merit Nomination Form, Service Nomination Form, Friends of the Society Application Form, ILS Citation of Merit Suggestion Sheet for completion within 2013 National Honours. Please read the 2013 Guidelines thoroughly prior to submitting nominations.

Some Branches have not submitted Honours for a number of years, is there a particular reason for this, is it something I can help with?  Who is carrying out the work of the Society within your areas? Please consider all volunteers – individuals, those from clubs and within your own Branch and complete relevant details to ensure no-one misses out on recognition.

As in 2012, there were again 9 Branches who did not make any nominations at all. Furthermore,  a staggering 25 Branches did not nominate even one young person for the Young Lifesaver of the Year Certificate. Please don’t let your Club or Branch members miss the opportunity of being nationally recognised.

Guidelines and Nomination forms for 2013 can now be downloaded from our website; typed nomination forms are preferable when making submissions. However, each form must be printed and signed – scanned signatures are not acceptable and forms will be returned which may result in nominations missing the deadline.

If you are unable to download the documents please email  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and copies will be posted to you.

Closing date for submissions at River House is 5 April 2013.
