IQL UK, the trading subsidiary of The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), is launching a new and improved National Rescue Award for swimming teachers and coaches.

The organisation consulted trainer assessors as well as teachers who had recently completed lifesaving training to ensure the new-look National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches course (NRASTC) meets the needs of the sector.

Following the consultations as well as comprehensive pilot studies, the award has been updated to meet current health and safety requirements. It features the latest skills and techniques on supervision and rescue to help anyone teaching or coaching swimming activity ensure a safer swimming environment in the absence of a lifeguard.

The revised qualification covers all aspects of lifesaving from class management and rescue to CPR and first aid. Teachers will learn how to identify potential hazards in a pool and how to react should an incident occur. And for the first time, the NRASTC qualification can be integrated with the RLSS UK’s Emergency First Aid at Work and AED qualifications if delivered at an RLSS UK approved training centre.

The award is supported by a host of new resources for course tutors delivering and assessing the qualification. These include comprehensive lesson plans, a new high quality PowerPoint presentation with fresh graphics and videos, and a brand new manual.

“This new National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches has been developed for the industry, by the industry. It provides the most up-to-date advice and guidance and therefore is a must for anyone supervising swimming or any other aquatic activities in a pool,” says Alex Blackwell, Head of Vocational Qualifications at IQL UK.

The new National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches will be available at the end of April 2015.
