The Training & Assessing Programme

Lifesavers Training and Assessing Programme consists of a comprehensive package of Modules, training materials and assessment tasks leading to appointment as a Lifesavers Teacher, with an option to continue to become a Trainer Assessor (someone who is both Teacher and Examiner), and at the highest level, a National Trainer Assessor.

The training programme consists of 2 foundation units - and these are followed up by Specialist Modules, each of which allows the candidate to become qualified in a range of specialist disciplines.

Q: How long will it be before I am fully qualified?
A: The foundation units last for 2 days, and the Specialist Modules range in time depending on which discipline is followed.

Attendance on any of the modules is followed by a period of moderation, and up to 2 years is allowed to accommodate this.

Q: How much does a course cost?
A: Costs vary around the UK. The costs reflect overheads of pool hire, room hire, use of equipment etc, and these vary from place to place. All courses are run at the cheapest possible price.

Q: What do I need in order to go on a course?
A: There are pre-requisites to attending the Core Modules. These are:

  • be aged 18 or over
  • be in personal Society membership
  • hold a current Lifesaving or Lifeguarding award

The Specialist Modules have their own prerequisites which vary between the disciplines.

Q: I am an ASA Teacher. Must I go back and do basic training again?
A: There is a process of accreditation for prior learning or achievement. Candidates who have a relevant background can apply for exemption from some (or all) of the training. Contact staff at River House for details lifesavers@rlss.org.uk.

Q: Where is my nearest course?
A: A list of Modules is updated regularly. Contact Lifesavers for details of your local co-ordinator.
