It has been an exciting time at RLSS UK HQ with everyone understanding and learning the new CPR and First Aid changes which were launched in October 2015. We are working around the clock to make sure that all of our publications and qualifications have these changes included for early 2016. It is worth noting that the current guidelines are still in effect and everything that is currently being taught is still safe and effective. That said, it didn’t stop the team at RLSS UK getting very excited when we went to complete the filming of the new CPR sequences at Longleat, Centre Parcs.

The team worked non-stop for two days, taking photos and footage in-line with the new guidelines, under the watchful eye of our retained medical professionals.

The full changes will be available to all Trainer Assessors, National Trainer Assessors, Lifesaving Instructors, Community Instructors and candidates from early 2016.

The changes in the resuscitation guidelines were minimal and include some of the following:

  1. Shouting for help is no longer an individual element within the CPR sequence, the focus is now on asking someone to call 999
  2. The new CPR flow chart (algorithm) has been revised so that it is more concise and easier to learn
  3. Training will be delivered on ‘telephone CPR’ which is where an emergency medical dispatcher can provide instruction on how to perform CPR
  4. Training will also focus on how seizures and a casualty who is not breathing normally could be an indication of cardiac arrest

At the time of printing we are still obtaining guidance from medical professionals regarding the changes to First Aid and look forward to communicating these with you in the New Year.
