Radcliffe on Trent Lifeguard ClubNigel Buck of Radcliffe on Trent Lifeguard Club shares with us the sad news that the club has had to shut its doors after 42 years and how, to mark the occasion, 10 members of the club achieved their Survive & Save Gold Medallion award on the final evening.

Radcliffe on Trent swimming pool closed its doors to the last ever swimmers at the end of October and is due shortly to be demolished.

A community swimming pool that has been in operation for 42 years. Initially built with money raised by the community of Radcliffe on Trent, Nottingham and since that time has been run as a joint venture with the local school.

Everyone who helped at the swimming pool was a volunteer and at its peak, it had 47 lifeguards together with another 54 assistants.

Nigel Buck, TA at the pool for the majority of the time said: “staff training with such large numbers was always a major achievement but extremely good fun”.

The lifeguards ranged in age from 19 years – 73 years of age and in fact, the oldest lifeguard who completed his NPLQ was Stanley Peck, a former President of the society, who sadly died earlier this year.

As well as the swimming pool closing the lifesaving club also finished at the same time bringing 39 years of training to an end.

To mark this occasion 10 members of the club worked really hard throughout 2014 and managed to complete their Survive and Save Gold Medallion award on the final evening. This is a significant award and really fitting that this was gained on the last ever swim session at the swimming pool.
