Children from a Stratford-upon-Avon primary school were taught vital water safety skills when staff from the UK’s drowning prevention charity paid them a visit this week.

Year 2 pupils at Bridgetown Primary School, Byron Road, were joined by Broom-based Royal Life Saving Society UK’s Youth Engagement Officer, Lee Heard, to have fun while learning seaside safety as part of their seaside rescue topic.

The 60 six to seven-year-olds played beach flag and ‘spot the dangers’ games, enjoyed an interactive presentation and learnt the SAFE code – an easy way for children to remember key safety messages when around water.

Teacher, Carlijn Thijssen, said: “We would like to thank Lee and the RLSS UK for coming to the school. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and it was clear they learned some very important messages. It was a great success!”

Lee Heard headed up the visit and said: “As the drowning prevention charity we want to teach as many children water safety skills as possible and it was great to get the opportunity to share vital messages in a fun way with the children.”

Year 2 pupil, six-year-old Max Bartly, added: “The visit was brilliant, especially the beach flag game!”
