Time to take the plunge in aid of drowning prevention

Now in its third year, the festival’s increasing popularity is a testament to the rise in open water swimming participation, an opportunity to support the UK’s Drowning Prevention Charity and is an easy introduction to the sport.

Former Olympian and RLSS UK Ambassador, Greg Whyte is leading the charge at the event on Sunday 21 May, and wants to encourage all swimmers to give it a go.

He said: “I’m delighted to be involved in the RLSS UK Open Water Festival again this year and with four competitions over the course of the day, there’s something for everyone. If you’ve ever wanted to give open water swimming a go, this is the perfect opportunity to jump right in!”

With two half-mile challenges, a tougher one mile swim and a Rookie Raid for the kids, the charity event sets itself as the ideal place for the beginner to try open water swimming for the very first time, and for the seasoned athlete to test themselves.

“This is a fabulous opportunity for swimmers of all levels, to try open water swimming in some truly prestigious surroundings,” said RLSS UK’s Technical Director, Adrian Lole.

“First and foremost, the event is designed to be a great day out for swimmers, their families and their friends, but it also gives people the chance to fundraise for and support RLSS UK in our drowning prevention work and our moves towards increasing secure, open water swimming locations across the UK.

“As leaders in water safety and lifesaving education, the work we do ensures that open water swimming, one of the UK’s fastest growing sports, remains both accessible and safe,” he added.

All participants will have the chance to take advantage of an on-site sport massage service, as well as the support of RLSS UK qualified lifeguards, throughout the event. There will be a variety of family activities, stalls, RLSS UK merchandise and refreshments, all in aid of the charity’s drowning prevention work. RLSS UK is pleased to confirm that the entry charges for all four swim events have been held at 2016 prices:

• The One Miler (16+ years only) £22 per person
• The Ladies Half-Miler (12+ years only) £22 per person
• The Family Friendly Half-Miler (12+ years only) £22 per person
• The Rookie Raid (8-12 years only) £6 per person

All fees include entry to the house and grounds of Ragley Hall for swimmers and two accompanying supporters, valid for those who arrive at the venue before 9:30am.

Anyone who arrives after 9:30am will be charged the standard entrance fee to Ragley Hall and Ragley Estate for the day.

The event follows a triathlon organised by Evesham Vale Triathletes.
