The RLSS UK Guidance for Swimming Teachers Providing Safety Cover for Swimming Lesson during COVID-19 has been created with Swim England, Swim Ireland, Scottish Swimming and Swim Wales to support Operators during COVID-19, to manage swimming teachers that are providing safety cover for swimming lessons (where a lifeguard is not in attendance) and may need to perform a rescue and/or give CPR/First Aid. It is not intended to be implemented until the Government has authorised swimming pools to re-open.

RLSS UK suggests that the guidance is considered when reviewing risk assessment, deciding on control measures to reduce risk and when developing revised operating procedures. The measures suggested in the guidance may not be appropriate for all venues and/or situations and should be considered as part of the wider plan to protect staff, customers and third parties. The guidance is not exhaustive and further guidance may be sort from other organisations.

Please note this is an ever-changing environment and guidance will be updated regularly following changes from the government. It is important that you ensure you have the most recent version, which can be found here.

Following the changes to the restrictions in England from 19/07/2021, Operators managing lifeguards or swimming teachers will need to review relevant risk assessments created to mitigate risk of spreading or contracting COVID-19, whilst they undertake their role. Any changes made, must be in line with the latest restrictions/ Government guidelines.
