Developed in response to the shortage of pool lifeguards across the leisure industry, the Be a Lifeguard campaign has two principal aims: to encourage as many young people as possible to take up lifeguarding and to help operators to promote their National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) courses.

RLSS UK’s NPLQ is the most awarded lifeguard qualification in the UK and Ireland with more than 95 per cent of all pool lifeguards qualified through RLSS UK. Seventy per cent of all RLSS UK lifeguards are aged 16 to 25.

The social media campaign will run throughout the summer on Facebook and Twitter. A film highlighting the varied role of lifeguards has also been produced to support the campaign.

RLSS UK has produced a comprehensive marking pack to help operators raise awareness of the campaign and to promote their lifesaving courses.

“The shortage of trained lifeguards is a serious problem for operators. Without adequate lifeguard cover, operators are forced to close lanes in the pool and even reduce their opening hours. Becoming a lifeguard is a great way for students to fund their studies or even start a career in the leisure industry, which is why we are targeting school leavers, students and university graduates with this new campaign,” says Martin Symcox, director of IQL UK, RLSS UK’s trading subsidiary.
