Professor Mark Wilson OBE, the co-founder of GoodSAM, delivered the keynote speech on Friday, 23 June, at the RLSS UK Conference 2023 and spoke about the GoodSAM app www.goodsamapp.org

Professor Mark Wilson - PhD MBBChir FRCS FIMC MRCA OBE

Mark is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Imperial College NHS Trust and a Pre-Hospital Care specialist. He is a Professor of Brain Injury at Imperial College London and formally the Gibson Chair of Pre-Hospital Care, Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care, Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.

Mark established and leads the neurotrauma service at St Mary’s Major Trauma Centre. He has worked for London’s Air Ambulance for over 11 years and currently works for Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. He is also the co-founder and medical director of GoodSAM (www.goodsamapp.org), an app that alerts those trained to cardiac arrests around them and is revolutionising remote assessment and management in pre-hospital emergencies through innovative use of video. It also manages 1 million NHS volunteers across the UK.

Mark’s main area of interest is the hyper-acute management of brain injury. His subspecialist research interests include intracranial pressure (ICP) and the cerebral effects of hypoxia. These emanated from his work investigating ICP in astronauts with NASA and his work investigating the effects of high altitude on multiple expeditions.

Mark has worked extensively overseas and is the author of the Medic’s Guide to Work and Electives Around the World. He was awarded an OBE for his services to pre-hospital care in 2020.”
