About the Aquatic Therapy Pool Rescue Award LIGHT (ATPRA LIGHT)

The ATPRA LIGHT is a supervision and rescue award for aquatic therapists and support workers working during programmed activities when lifeguard or first aid backup is available to respond quickly in the event of an emergency.

It is suitable for those working in a variety of pools, including where the water is deeper than your standing depth.

This award is only suitable when the facility has staff qualified as lifeguards or first aiders that are available to respond quickly to you in the event of an emergency.

ATPRA LIGHT Course Prerequisites

The ATPRA LIGHT course is open to anyone who is 16 years of age or older at the date of assessment and be able to:

  • Swim a minimum of 25 metres on your front and back
  • Surface dive to the deepest part of the pool
  • Climb out unaided without using steps or ladders (where venue design permits)

Course Content

The ATPRA course is 6 hours plus assessment and is deliverable in two days.

  • The Therapist, Risk Assessment and Pool Safety
  • Intervention, Rescue and Emergency Action
  • CPR and drowning/ effects of drowning

Assessment

To achieve the ATPRA LIGHT certificate, candidates must pass a formal assessment at the end of the course, where trainees demonstrate the skills and knowledge learned in the form or a theory and practical assessment.


Renewal

ATPRA LIGHT renewal candidates may renew their award within the period of validity of their existing award as stated on their certificate. To requalify candidates will need to complete the course and assessment as a new candidate 


Approved Prior Learning (APL)

In some circumstances, candidates may be able to show evidence of prior achievement to exempt themselves from sections of the course. 

Where candidates wish to claim a training exemption, they must provide the course trainer with original qualifications prior to the start of the course.

Next steps
