The National Speed Lifesaving Championships relies heavily on a dedicated team of volunteers who work behind the scenes to ensure the event is a success.

We have opportunities across a range of areas, including administration, media, event support and operations. You don’t have to be a member of a lifesaving club – you just have to be eager, reliable and willing to put your hand up.

Volunteers are provided with a shirt, meals during the shift, an accreditation pass, and of course memories that will last a lifetime!

Uniform

Officials will be required to wear blue trousers/shorts/skirt with a current RLSS UK Officials shirt.

Volunteers will be required to wear a role appropriate shirt.

Role Descriptions

Officiating

  • Referee or Deputy Referee(FW) (Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday): To ensure the smooth running of the competition and that all competitors can compete on a fair and equal level. This will involve working with officials, volunteers, team managers and competitors.
  • Technical Official(FW) (Friday evening (optional), Saturday and Sunday): Several roles are available for suitably qualified officials – Event Director, Starter, Finish Judge, Lane Judge, Turn Judge, Competitor Liaison.
  • Underwater Official(FW) (Saturday and Sunday): Join the underwater team to ensure the smooth running of the event. This will involve scuba diving those individuals who are PADI or BSAC qualified are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Timekeeper(S) (Various Sessions): Be part of the officiating team, accurately capturing and recording times achieved by competitors.

Fundraising

  • Perry Buoy Costume(S) (Various Sessions): Perry Buoy is the public cuddly face of the RLSS UK. Perry Buoy will be making an appearance at different stages throughout the competition. This role will involve dressing up as Perry Buoy and interacting with members of the public and children. A reasonable level of fitness is required as the costume is slightly heavy.
  • Perry Buoy Support(S) (Various Sessions): Escort Perry Buoy safely around the venue and be responsible for taking donations made to the charity during the walk.
  • Raffle Ticket Seller(S) (Various Sessions): Selling raffle tickets on behalf of the RLSS UK Speeds 2019 raffle. All proceeds going towards drowning prevention.
  • Bucket Collector(S) (Various Sessions): We need enthusiastic and polite people who can communicate key drowning prevention messages to members of the general public whilst motivating them to donate to the charity. Bucket collections are an essential way of raising money for the RLSS UK.

Event Support

  • Runners(S) (Various Sessions): Support event team to ensure the smooth running of the competition. This will involve working with officials, competitors and team managers. It will also involve hosting duties, moving equipment and general event support.
  • Exhibition Stands(S) (Various Sessions): Work with the event team to man the exhibition stands. This will involve talking to members of the public, competitors and spectators, dealing with enquiries, taking donations, selling programmes and raffle tickets.
  • Social Media Support(S) (Various Sessions): Be part of the RLSS UK Communications Team to support social media activities throughout the event and taking photos.
  • Programme Sales(S) (Various Sessions): Work with the event team to welcome competitors, team managers, spectators and members of the public, whilst selling programmes.
  • Underwater Team(S) (Various Sessions): Work with the Underwater Diving Team to deliver a successful and smooth event. This will include swimming and moving equipment.
  • Welfare (S) (Various sessions): Support volunteers and officials, based in the officials room. Ensuring refreshments are provided to all.

 


Information about Expenses

Food and Refreshments

Session positions (S):
Volunteers for morning or afternoon sessions will receive refreshments distributed throughout the competition. Volunteers for both morning and afternoon sessions will receive refreshments and lunch.

Full weekend positions (FW):

Volunteers for full weekend positions will receive all meals and refreshments over the two days. Meals included:

  • Saturday: Breakfast provided at the hotel and Lunch provided at the venue
  • Sunday: Breakfast provided at the hotel and Lunch provided at the venue.

Dinner on Friday, Saturday and Sunday is to be purchased and claimed via expenses.

Refreshments including, snacks and hot and cold drinks, will be available in the officials’ room at the competition venue. Only volunteers working in the pool (Underwater Volunteers) will be permitted to have hot drinks on the poolside.


Accommodation

Shared twin room accommodation will be provided for all full weekend volunteers at this event.

Once places in the event team have been confirmed, you will be asked to indicate who you would be happy to share a hotel room with. If you are not able to share a room, please contact us at [email protected] and we will arrange for a single room to be booked.

If you would like to book your own accommodation, you will be able to claim up to £50 expenses from RLSS UK per night (including breakfast).
