The RLSS UK guidance notes for organising lifesaving and lifeguarding of open water training and assessment, has been designed to ensure that all activities in or on open water are conducted at recognised and safe locations with appropriate supervisory arrangements in line with the local operating plans (Safety Operating Procedures SOP’s) and supplemented by an activity specific risk assessment.

These guidelines can be used for lifesaving activity, as well as Open Water Lifeguard, National Vocational Beach Lifeguard, and National Water Safety Management Programme training and assessment.

Included is information about the relevant safety provision required, how to conduct a risk assessment, and important information to ensure the training and assessment is conducted safely.
