Looking to leave behind the stresses of 2023 and make waves towards achieving that all enticing notion of great health and wellbeing? Well, if one of your New Year’s resolutions this year is to get active and take up a hobby, our Club Development team are encouraging you to try something new and get stuck into Lifesaving Sport?

What is Lifesaving Sport?

Lifesaving Sport is one of the fastest growing sports in the world – and the only sport to have humanitarian origins. It’s a competitive and dynamic swimming discipline made up of multiple different events including Line Throwing, Obstacles and Manikin Tows. It’s a great way to improve your fitness whilst developing lifesaving skills!

Lifesaving Sport is designed for everyone, whether you’re a complete beginner, already a competitive swimmer, or even a qualified lifeguard. You can start from just 8 years old in our Rookie Lifeguard Sport programmes, but all ages are welcome.

Already a qualified instructor?

In December, we were delighted to launch a new suite of Sport Awards with the aim of increasing participation in the sport - so if you’re already a National Lifesaving Academy (NLA) Instructor, you may even be interested in branching out to teach the Sport Awards in 2024!

Doing so would help make a real difference by teaching lifesaving skills to a wider audience – something very rewarding which can also bring a deep sense of mental wellbeing and fulfilment.

Why choose Lifesaving Sport?

Boasting many health benefits, Lifesaving Sport is a great way to stay active and get fit. From surface diving to towing with a rescue tube, this unique sport will help to improve your physical endurance, all while encouraging a healthier lifestyle overall. The benefits of swimming and exercising in water also help to reduce stress and have a calming effect on the body and mind. Less stress? Yes please!

As you push yourself outside of your comfort zone and embark on this journey in 2024 to maintaining sound health, Lifesaving Sport could equip you with valuable transferable skills along the way. From building key leadership skills to completing ongoing training and fostering strong relationships within the community, there is something for everyone in Lifesaving Sport. And what better time to start than now?
