The start of Volunteers Week (#volunteersweek) is an exciting time for me as it gives me a chance to say a personal thank you and celebrate all the amazing work of volunteers that support the Royal life Saving Society UK and the cause to prevent drowning.

This is a wonderful charity that is built on a bedrock of passionate and committed individuals that freely give their time. It is astonishing to observe the different motivations of individuals who are prepared to use up what is such precious time. Over the past five years drowning rates and have been on a steady decline and this is all down to the hard work and commitment of volunteers.

This week is a celebration, a celebration of volunteers. I am immensely proud to sit in the role of Head of Volunteering, my pride is renewed every day when I get to interact with volunteers across the whole of the UK and Ireland who are changing lives and creating smiles. I see it is a great responsibility and honour to ensure that in every way we celebrate you as volunteers.

Throughout Volunteer Week we will be writing a series of blogs as well as flooding social media channels to celebrate RLSS UK #Heroes. We want to hear your stories and we want to know your #heroes so join our campaign and join our movement to say a deserved thank you to the volunteers close to you.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart
