About the Aquatic Therapy Pool Rescue Award (ATPRA)

The ATPRA is a pool supervision and rescue award for aquatic therapists and support workers working during programmed activities. It is suitable for those working in a variety of pools, including where the water is deeper than your standing depth.

ATPRA Course Prerequisites

The ATPRA course is open to anyone who is 16 years of age or older at the date of assessment and be able to:

  • Must be 16 years of age at the date of assessment
  • Be able to meet the following criteria prior to the course:
    • Regain their footing from a face-down and face-up floating position
    • Surface dive to the deepest part of the pool
    • Climb out without help and without using steps or ladders (where venue design permits)
  • Must complete minimum guided learning hours 
  • Successfully complete the course assessment

Course Content

The ATPRA course is 12 hours plus assessment and is deliverable in two days.

  • Module 1 – The Therapist, Risk Assessment and Pool Safety
  • Module 2 – Intervention, Rescue and Emergency Action
  • Module 3 – CPR & First Aid

Assessment

To achieve the ATPRA certificate, candidates must pass a formal assessment at the end of the course, where trainees demonstrate the skills and knowledge learned in the form of a theory and practical assessment.


Renewal

ATPRA renewal candidates may renew their award within the period of validity of their existing award as stated on their certificate. To requalify candidates will need to complete the course and assessment as a new candidate.


Approved Prior Learning (APL)

In some circumstances, candidates may be able to show evidence of prior achievement to exempt themselves from sections of the course. 

Where candidates wish to claim a training exemption, they must provide the course trainer with original qualifications prior to the start of the course.
