Mirror launches 'Save Lives for Sam' water safety campaign 7 June 2026 The Mirror, in collaboration with the Royal Life Saving Society UK and Lee Pitcher MP, is running a 6-week water safety campaign, called 'Save Lives for Sam', ahead of the school summer holidays, lobbying the government to prioritise water safety. The 'Save Lives for Sam' water safety campaign is focussed on lobbying the government in four key areas: 1) Nationwide Public Safety Awareness Campaign on Social Media Platforms We are calling for a nationwide Public Safety Awareness Campaign targeting parents and children via TikTok and social media to raise awareness and increase understanding of water-related risks. 2) Urging Greater Responsibility from Water Companies, Landowners etc We urge water companies, landowners and those in responsible for high-risk water bodies to take ownership by implementing proper safety measures and installing essential water safety and rescue equipment. 3) Compulsory lessons in schools (ahead of the holidays) Every child should be taught how to survive if they get into difficulty in the water. This should cover the Water Safety Code, the ‘Float to Live’ survival message, and Phone-Float-Throw bystander guidance. 4) Progressing 'Sam's Law' into legislation We are calling on the Government to enact 'Sam's Law', which would require the installation of water rescue equipment around high-risk large bodies of water. Tampering with or stealing this equipment should become an aggravated criminal offence.
