NWSMP is a key step forward in developing the water safety knowledge, skills and confidence of those operating around the water safety margins.


Interested in becoming a NWSMP Instructor?

The pre-requisites to become an NWSMP Instructor are:

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Must hold a recognised teaching and assessing qualification from a recognised awarding body
  • Must already have some open water experience, e.g. surfing, canoeing, kayaking, etc.
  • Submit a short CV detailing open water experience (to be submitted to the tutor)
  • Complete the four-day Instructor Programme, integrating both NWSMP Levels 1 – 3, including all three environments of Level 2: Beach, River and Still Water
  • For those candidates who already hold the NWSMP Levels 1 – 3, complete the two-day Instructor Orientation Programme
  • Must pass Life Support 3 assessment
  • If a candidate wishes to deliver any/all of the bolt-on modules: APPE, Occupational Flood Safety, Pool, these must also be completed

Quality Assurance

Probationary Instructors:

  • Are mentored by their allocated Tutor before, during and after the first course(s) they deliver
  • Must comply with RLSS UK Code of Practice and NWSMP delivery and assessment guidance documentation
  • Must maintain a current CPR Update and hold a valid LS3 or equivalent, e.g. NPLQ, NVBLQ
  • Complete any further RLSS UK updates as and when they arise
