Building a Safer Community: RLSS UK's Risk Assessment for Hildenborough's West Wood Pond

Earlier in 2024, Hildenborough Parish Council approached RLSS UK Consultancy Services to conduct a comprehensive water safety risk assessment for a wild pond located in West Wood. This pond, recently dredged to serve as a breeding ground for the Great Crested Newt under a Medway Valley Countryside Partnership initiative, has raised safety concerns within the community due to its increased depth and proximity to the West Wood Playground and public pathways frequently used by dog walkers.  

Key Objectives 

The primary objective was to identify potential risks associated with the pond and provide actionable recommendations to enhance the safety of residents and visitors. The risk assessment aimed to:

  • Assess current water safety provisions
  • Identify hazards
  • Offer effective control measures
  • Enhance community safety and engagement. 

Water Safety Risk Assessment 

In May, an RLSS UK consultant visited the site and met with members of the Hildenborough Parish Council to thoroughly understand the area and its specific challenges. During this visit, the consultant conducted a detailed assessment of the current water safety provision. The evaluation focused on several areas, including: 

  • Signage Public
  • Rescue Equipment (PRE)
  • Access Control
  • Maintenance Requirements
  • Safe Working Practices
  • Community Engagement
  • Pond Dipping
