The Emergency Outdoor First Aid course is a one-day first aid qualification that covers a range of CPR and emergency outdoor first aid skills. Emergency Outdoor First Aid (EOFA) provides employers and staff with the skills to provide basic initial first aid care and reduce the risks and dangers in outdoor environments.   

The Emergency Outdoor First Aid (EOFA) qualification is suitable for anybody who works or manages activities within an outdoor environment and meets the requirements of an employer's first aid needs assessment. After completing an RLSS UK EOFA course, candidates receive a Level 3 Emergency Outdoor First Aid qualification.

About the Emergency Outdoor First Aid (EOFA) Course 
 

The RLSS UK Qualifications Level 3 Emergency Outdoor First Aid (EOFA) qualification enables a first aider to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill in an outdoor environment with close access to further support.  

The one-day Emergency Outdoor First Aid course covers a range of CPR and first aid skills which provides you or your staff with the first aid skills to provide basic initial first aid care and ensure a safe working environment.  

The Emergency Outdoor First Aid qualification is Ofqual and Qualification Wales accredited and valid for three years after the date of assessment.  

The Emergency Outdoor First Aid (EOFA) course content can be covered within 8 hours and can be delivered in one day or split into smaller sessions over 4 weeks from the start of the course. The EOFA course comprises practical and theoretical classroom work, including practical and multiple-choice theory assessments on CPR and first aid skills.

Prerequisites to complete an Emergency Outdoor First Aid Course 
 

Candidates must be a minimum of 16-years-old at the time of taking the Emergency Outdoor First Aid assessment, and no prior first aid knowledge is required.  



Who is the Emergency Outdoor First Aid Course Recommended For?  

Everyone! Individuals and organisations are advised to take an Emergency Outdoor First Aid course to provide and deliver first aid skills in an outdoor environment.



Emergency Outdoor First Aid Course Content 
 

A range of subjects are covered within the Emergency Outdoor First Aid course, including:  

  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of an outdoor first aider
  • Understand the environmental factors that affect outdoor first aiders
  • How to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally 
  • How to manage a casualty who is in shock  
  • How to assess an incident  
  • How to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking
  • How to manage a casualty with a minor injury
  • How to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally 
  • How to manage a casualty with external bleeding
  • How to manage a casualty suffering from the effects of hot and cold
  • How to provide insulation and emergency shelter in the outdoors

Emergency Outdoor First Aid Assessment Criteria 
 

The RLSS UK Emergency Outdoor First Aid course is trainer assessed and comprises practical work and theoretical work (multiple-choice question paper). There is a practical assessment on CPR and first aid, and all assessment criteria must be met to pass an Emergency Outdoor First Aid course.  



Renewal Process for an Emergency Outdoor First Aid Certificate  

To renew an Emergency Outdoor First Aid certificate, candidates must re-qualify by being assessed against all learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the qualification. A renewal is achieved by redoing the initial 8-hours of course content.
