The Swim School Health and Safety Award (SSHSA) is an 18-hour course. It is delivered online, in a variety of layouts to fit within the demands of a swim school. The course is aimed at swim school owners and those working within a swim school with responsibilities for health and safety.

This award has been designed to help swim school owners understand their legal duty with regard to health and safety. The following content is covered with a focus on how it is relevant to a swim school owner.

  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • A range of regulations from The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, COSHH, PPE, PUWER, LOLER, Fire Safety Order etc.
  • External Hire Agreements / Contracts
  • The basics of pool plant capacity and tests
  • HR policies and procedures
  • Swim School Accreditations

The SSHSA is designed for anyone who owns their own swim school, anyone working within a swim school with responsibilities for health and safety, pool owners or franchisees who allow swim lessons to be carried out in their pool. This course is essential for those who would ultimately be held responsible if an incident occurs and need to understand their legal obligation to run a safe and successful swim school business.

This qualification is aimed at candidates aged 18+.

Delivery method

SSHSA is delivered using workshops, hazard perception, scenario-based discussions, and case studies. Candidates use workbooks containing key syllabus information to complete tasks, activities and make notes/actions to help once they return to their swim school. The course is delivered remotely via an online platform to allow for discussion and interaction.

For more information, email [email protected] or call us at 0300 323 0096.

Assessment method

SSHSA is assessed in two parts theory multiple-choice questions (MCQ) and a short project.

Don’t just take our word for it, read about what our customers say about the training and award:

I found the Swim School Health and Safety Award incredibly useful and got a lot out of it.  It is great to have a Health & Safety course relevant to our industry.”

Kelly, Swim School Owner

“I found the Swim School Health and Safety Award to be very informative, and it strengthened my knowledge in several areas. The regulations for pool owners and swim schools were explained, as were the implications of failing to have systems in place.

The course ran at a good pace and an appropriate level. I would thoroughly recommend anyone hiring out a pool for lessons or running a swim school to attend this course.”

Justine, Swimming Teacher (17 years) and Swim School Owner (10 years)
