1. Research the area before you go - Check the water temperature, weather, wind, current and tidal flow conditions. 
  2. Use a recognised venue, read warning signs, know your exit point.
  3. Use the right equipment – wetsuit, bright swim hat, tow float. 
  4. Go with a buddy and always tell someone at home when to expect you back.
  5. Have warm, dry clothes, a hat, and snacks ready for when you get out.
  6. If you start to get into trouble or feel overwhelmed – stay calm, float on your back, call for help.
  7. Know and follow the Water Safety Code.
