The Emergency First Aid at Work course is a one day first aid qualification that covers a range of CPR and emergency first aid skills. Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) provides employers and your staff with the skills to reduce the risks and dangers in your workplace – because a safe working environment is a basic right for all workers and a responsibility for all employers.  

The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification is suitable for all industries and enables employers to meet HSE and HSENI requirements. After completing an RLSS UK EFAW course, candidates receive a Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work qualification. 

RLSS UK’s Emergency First Aid at Work training is CIMSPA endorsed, which means it has been quality-assured by CIMSPA. RLSS UK is an active member of the First Aid Awarding Organisation Forum (FAAOF) whose remit is to collaborate on best practice and maintain quality to ensure the integrity and currency of regulated qualifications. 

EFAW is regulated by Ofqual, Qualifications Wales and CCEA in Northern Ireland.

About the Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Course  

The RLSS UK Qualifications Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification enables a first aider to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill while at work. 

The one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course covers a range of CPR and first aid skills which provides you or your staff with the first aid skills to ensure a safe working environment. 

The Emergency First Aid at Work qualification is Ofqual, CCEA and Qualification Wales accredited and valid for three years after the date of assessment. It is suitable for all industries and enables you to meet HSE and HSENI requirements. 

The Emergency First Aid at Work course content can be covered within 6 hours and can be delivered in one-day or split into smaller sessions over a 4-week period from the start of the course. A blended learning version of the course is also available. The EFAW course comprises of practical work and theoretical classroom work, including practical and multiple-choice theory assessment on CPR and first aid skills.

Prerequisites to do an Emergency First Aid at Work Course 

Candidates must be a minimum of 16-years-old at the time of taking the Emergency First Aid at Work assessment, and no prior first aid knowledge is required. 



Who is the Emergency First Aid at Work Course Recommended For? 

Everyone! Individuals and organisations are advised to take an Emergency First Aid at Work course to provide and deliver first aid skills within their workplaces. 



Emergency First Aid at Work Course Content 

A range of subjects are covered within the Emergency First Aid at Work course, including: 

  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of a first aider 
  • How to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally 
  • How to manage a casualty who is in shock 
  • How to assess an incident 
  • How to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking 
  • How to manage a casualty with a minor injury 
  • How to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally 
  • How to manage a casualty with external bleeding 

If you require more advanced first aid skills, you may need our First Aid at Work (FAW) qualification instead.

Emergency First Aid at Work Assessment Criteria 

The RLSS UK Emergency First Aid at Work course is trainer assessed and comprises of practical work and theoretical classroom work. There is a practical assessment on CPR and first aid, and all assessment criteria must be achieved to pass an Emergency First Aid at Work course. 



Renewal Process for an Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate 

To renew an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate, candidates must re-qualify by being assessed against all learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the qualification. A renewal is achieved by redoing the initial 6-hours of course content.
